The Reds don’t look likely to spend big this transfer window (although there’s still time!), but in the midst of a trio of contract extensions for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson, we have signed one man: Ibrahima Konate.

If, like me, you are atrocious at following transfer news, keeping up to speed with football on the continent and can’t be arsed watching hours of YouTube videos to pretend you’re an expert on every single player we sign… Fear not! I’ve done the background digging for you. So just who is Ibrahima Konate and why should you be excited about his presence in the Liverpool defence?

Ibrahima Konate Profile

Nickname: Ibou

Age: 22

Born in: Paris, France

Position: Centre-back

Squad number: 5

Transfer value: £36 million

Previous clubs: Sochaux, RB Leipzig

Konate started his career at Sochaux in the city of Montbéliard in eastern France. A stone’s throw from the Swiss and German borders, Konaté started life as a striker but quickly transitioned to defence.

After just 12 games for the French team founded by a member of the Peugeot family, Konate required a gear change and joined RB Leipzig for the start of the 2017/2018 season.

RB Leipzig

On a free transfer, it didn’t take RB Leipzig long to realise they’d bagged a bit of a diamond in Konate and his presence quickly became a vital option in the back four.

I can’t lie, I have not seen Konate play very often at all so I will save my opinions for when I’ve seen him settle down in a Liverpool shirt but the general consensus is that the Frenchman is a strong, commanding defender with pace on his side. At 6 ft 4 in, he will certainly cause a problem in the air.

Fun fact: Konaté was celebrating his 6th birthday the day Liverpool won their 5th Champions League title in Istanbul.

While at RB Leipzig, Konate made a total of 95 appearances, scoring four goals along the way. He also has some significant experience in Europe having featured in both the Champions League and Europa League for the German side.

Ibra played in all six of RB Leipzig’s group games in their 2020/2021 Champions League campaign but did not feature in either of the last 16 legs against Liverpool.

Liverpool completed the signing of Konate on 1st July 2021. His signing brought excitement to many in the fan base, perhaps bolstered by his celebration video when he released his new shirt number surrounded by mates and flares. Too cool.

Upon signing for the Reds Konate said it was a “really exciting moment for me and my family and I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and getting started on this new chapter.”

After making his debut in Liverpool’s pre-season Ibrahima noted he had “good communication with everybody”, something that is going to be key it feels as he learns to work alongside Virgil.

From the little that I’ve seen and the stats that we know, this lad definitely looks like a good fit for Klopp’s team and I’m really looking forward to watching him play. The only minor blip is the potential for injury as it looks as though he may have had a few problems in the past with his thigh? Fingers crossed that doesn’t become a pattern.
